AI for Small Businesses: Practical Uses, Automation, and Real-World Benefits
A grounded look at how automation supports solo operators without replacing decision-making or ownership
Running a small business can be incredibly isolating. On the inside, you are meeting with your CEO, accountant, social media manager, and business operations manager — on the outside, you are sitting alone, talking to yourself (we get it, you don’t look crazy, I promise)
You’re the one answering emails.
You’re the one figuring out pricing.
You’re the one posting, fixing, following up, planning, adjusting.
Even when things are going well, there’s this constant awareness in the background: If I don’t do it, it doesn’t get done.
Where AI fits in, and Can Help
There’s a lot of noise around AI right now. Some of it makes it sound like you’re about to be replaced, some of it makes it sound like you should be doing everything with it already.
But, Neither of those things are true.
What we’ve found—through our own work and the businesses we support—is something much simpler: AI is a way to take a little bit of the weight off, without giving up control. Not all of it, Not even most of it. Just enough to breathe.
You Still Own the Work
This is what matters. Using AI in your business doesn’t mean handing things over. It doesn’t mean your voice disappears or your decisions get outsourced. If anything, it’s the opposite.
In fact, The first thing I do when I start working with a new marketing client is write what I call an AI constitution. Before anything gets automated or scaled, we define what AI can do, what it shouldn’t do, and where human judgment stays firmly in place.
It’s a way of making sure the business stays the decision-maker, not the tool. AI can move quickly and produce a lot, but without clear boundaries it can just as easily create work that feels off, inconsistent, or disconnected from what actually matters.
Taking the time to set those expectations upfront keeps everything aligned—and it keeps ownership where it belongs.
You decide:
What gets automated
What stays fully human
What gets a starting point vs. what gets your full attention
AI can draft something. It can organize something. It can speed up the parts of the work that drain you.
But it doesn’t decide what your business stands for.
It doesn’t decide how you show up for people.
It doesn’t replace your judgment.
You’re still the one running the business.
A Different Kind of Support
When you’re working on your own (or close to it), support usually means one of two things:
Hiring someone—which isn’t always financially possible yet
Or pushing through—which isn’t always sustainable
AI sits somewhere in between.
It’s not a team member you pay, but it can act like support in small, practical ways:
Helping you get unstuck on something you’ve been avoiding
Giving you a starting point instead of a blank page
Handling repetitive tasks that don’t need your full energy
Those small shifts can change how a day feels and overtime, change how your business runs.
How We Think About It (And Use It Ourselves)
We use AI inside our own work every day inn a way that supports human thinking as opposed to replacing it.
Sometimes it’s as simple as:
Starting a piece of writing when the words aren’t coming
Organizing ideas that feel scattered
Taking something that lives in our head and making it usable
And every time, the same question applies:
Does this make the work feel clearer or heavier?
If it makes things noisier, we step back.
If it makes things clearer, we keep it.
That’s the line.
If this is something you’ve been thinking about—even loosely—we’re starting to share more of how we approach this in real, practical ways.
Not theory. Not hype.
Just what’s actually working, and what isn’t.
A short conversation can often reveal where the biggest improvements are hiding.
Let’s build what’s next.
