Garland Sutton: The Artist Behind The Lens
Photographer Garland Sutton makes his Debut at Longview Gallery this March
As we approach the official opening of Longview Gallery and the reception for our first exhibition, Reflections, we would like to introduce the featured artist whose work will grace our walls this March. Garland Sutton, who is also making a debut with his collection of landscape photography, is originally from Salem, Virginia. After extensive travel throughout the US (with camera in hand), Sutton has made the city of Philadelphia, PA his home.
In the artist’s words:
I am an artist and photographer who attempts to capture the essence of the world in its simplest form. My work is an acknowledgment of the fascinating compositions I encounter along my path, whether visual, coincidental, or emotional. I aim to recognize the moments that often go unnoticed or unappreciated.
As a child, I kept a journal of my dreams as a means of remembering them. However, the act of writing them down pushed the important details to the periphery and made them impossible to grasp. To capture the essence, I decided that I’d need to record my impressions and feelings that the dreams evoked. Through this process, I found a way to trigger the same feeling from the dream without having to remember every single detail.
In the collection of works featured in Reflections, I strive to remember authentically and to reflect on the gap between original intention and discovered meaning. I hope that there is something universal in the composition, poignant in the design, and persistent in the language.
RSVP to attend our opening reception and meet the artist on Saturday, March 2nd, 2024 here.
